Mark looks back to his favourite trip of 2013

"My favourite trip of last year was definitely a fly-drive I did in Namibia - what an incredible country! In the course of 10 days I covered 1800 miles, climbed the world's biggest sand dunes, drove around one of Africa's best national parks, drunk German-style lager on the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and watched the sun set over the Kalahari Desert. My highlights were Etosha National Park, where you can drive yourself and get extremely close to lion, rhino, elephant and a host of other game; and the dunes at Sossusvlei, which is probably the single most spectacular place I've ever been to!
Mark at the Tropic of Capircorn in NamibiaThis was my first trip to Namibia and it's somewhere I'd recommend to anyone with a sense of adventure - if you love spectacular scenery and incredible wildlife then it's for you, but if you're more of a nightlife and cities person then perhaps not. The one thing that really strikes you as you drive around Namibia is just how varied the countryside is - every few minutes it seems to change, and you're constantly stopping to take photos of stunning panoramas. The route I took from Swakopmund to Etosha took me through Damaraland, and the scenery here was probably the most spectacular - I was almost too late arriving at Etosha to be allowed in as I stopped too often to take in the views!

Driving is fairly easy in Namibia - roads are quiet and you can pick up a decent pace. About half of the mileage I clocked up was on good quality tarred roads, while the other half was on unmade gravel roads - once you learn the knack of driving on gravel then it's straightforward enough. Just keep an eye out for wildlife at the side of the road, especially the warthogs that seem to appear out of nowhere!

Namibia is definitely on my list of favourite destinations I've been too, and while a trip here is more of an adventure than a holiday, it's definitely a destination worth considering!

Our Top Trips in 2018 - Mark in Australia

We're continuing our look back at our teams travels this week - Mark visited Australia on an epic three-state trip, starting in Sydney, moving to Victoria and driving most of the Queensland Coast in a campervan - here's a quick look at the highlights of his Aussie adventure. . . . Starting in Sydney The first time I visited Australia was 27 years ago as an 18-year old backpacker, but I'm always excited to go back - it's one of the most diverse, incredible countries on the planet. As with many visits Down Under I started in Sydney , which is a very easy city to get to grips with - for me, if you stay anywhere between Central Station and Circular Quay you can't go too far wrong, and it's such as easy place to explore. I stayed right in the middle of Sydney at the Grace Hotel , which has pretty much everything you want to see within a 20 minute walk - I took in the Sydney Tower Eye, Darling Harbour and the amazing Sydney Opera House, all on foot.
